OUR STORY
About LYTE
Founded in 1999 by Jane Johnson, The Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble (LYTE) is a respected youth theatre company now led by educator and artistic director Mandy Gibson.
At LYTE, we believe the arts are essential to education, wellbeing, and the creation of a compassionate, connected community. We specialise in contemporary and classic theatre, introducing thousands of young Tasmanians to the transformative power of performance.
Our company is known for high-quality skills development and MainStage productions that engage and inspire young audiences and families. Through our work, we nurture creativity, confidence, and courage—helping young people realise their full potential both on and off the stage.
LYTE offers programs across four company levels —Pre-Junior, Junior, Middle, and Senior/Adult—tailored to each age group. We have also added LYTE's choir kids to our repertoire. Our approach blends creative exploration, storytelling, and theatre craft with mindfulness and wellbeing, encouraging students to be present, brave, and generous artists.
Recognised by the community and arts industry alike, LYTE has a proud history of developing skilled, professional-minded young performers. Many of our alumni go on to perform with other theatre companies in the state, others study at leading institutions such as NIDA, WAAPA, VCA, and UTAS, and pursue successful careers in the arts.
Being part of LYTE is a fun, challenging, and rewarding journey—one that builds creativity, confidence, and lifelong friendships. Here, young people discover the power of storytelling, the importance of connection, and the courage to share their unique artistic voice.
